Astream of air at 35 degree c and a gauge pressure of 0.5 atm (stream 1) flows into a pipe passing through a heater, emerges at 87 degree c and 0.2 atm (gauge), and splits into two streams. stream 2 passes out of the system, and stream 3 goes through another heater and emerges at 180 degree c and 0.1 atm (gauge). flowmeters mounted in all three streams show readings of 3120 l/min (stream 1), 1940 l/min (stream 2), and 3420 l/min (stream 3). (a) show that the system is not functioning properly. (b) speculate on several possible causes of the malfunction, and state how you would check each one.

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.
