On my bookshelf of paper books, I have a dictionary that consists of multiple volumes, each of which is a book. One covers A-E, another F-J, another K-M, and so on. To find a word, I look at the alphabetic ranges to find the right volume. Then I use the ranges at the top of each page to turn to the proper page. Then I find the word on the page.
