the first step is to calculate the total amount that tuition will be after 8 years. this part's pretty simple, and there are multiple ways you can solve it. one way is take 32% and convert into a decimal, 0.32, then multiply it by 3,125. you could then add this number to the original tuition, since it will be an increase. otherwise, you could do some mental (or calculator) math and figure that 132% of the original tuition will be present after 8 years, and simply multiply the tuition by 1.32. either way, tuition will be 1000 more than the current tuition, or $4,125.

now, all you need to do is calculate the savings. in this case, arther's family will be saving $75 per month for 5 years, or 60 months (5*12). now, just multiply 75 times 60 to get the total amount of savings, which happens to be 4,500. this means that they will be able to pay for a two-year college when they save in this manner, with $375 left over.
