Why is butene gas at room temperature

Butane is a gas at room temperature and pressure, but the butane found in some cigarette lighters is a liquid. How can this be?

It is also an indication of the tendency of a gas to escape from liquid phase. For example, a substance with a high vapor pressure at normal temperatures is a volatile substance (high tendency to become vapor). If the pressure in a closed system is higher than the vapor pressure of a substance at the given temperature, then the substance will be "compressed" to liquid state.
