There is energy stored in the molecules of the food we eat. Fats and carbohydrates in particular contain a lot of chemical energy. Calories, in fact, are another unit for measuring energy. In America, there is currently a lot of concern and opinions over carbonated beverages. The city of New York has even attempted to ban certain businesses from selling sugary sodas in large containers. 1. Do some research on the controversy surrounding these type of beverages. Do you think that the government should regulate the sale or production of sugary drinks? Explain why or why not.
2. Do some research on soda consumption in the United States, how much soda does the average person consume each year? How many gallons are produced every year? Share your results with your classmates.
3. Diet sodas do not contain sugar, and have virtually no calories, making them sound like an ideal solution to the soda problem. Do some research, are there any disadvantages, health risks, or ways that diet sodas could still contribute to weight gain? Share your findings.
