QUESTION
Atoms of different elements either lose, gain or share electrons in order to attain a structure like that of a
noble gas/element. Carbon with atomic number and relative atomic mass 6 and 12 respectively shares
electrons from its outermost shell in order to be stable.
(ii)
(iii)
Explain the meaning of the terms below;
Noble element
Atomic number
Relative atomic mass
With the aid of a labelled diagram, show the structure of a carbon atom.
What scientific term is used to refer to the sharing of electrons between/among atoms in order
for them to attain stability?
In a reaction, chlorine forms a compound with carbon to give a tetrachloride. Write the
chemical formula and draw the structure of the formed substance.
Distinguish the properties of the compound formed in (iv) above from those of magnesium
chloride.
Using only the valence shells, show how magnesium compound is formed.
