You need either acid or base as a catalyst. Then the pair can undergo the aldol reaction.

Products from the reaction of the two aldehydes with each other are

CH3-CHOH-CH(CH3)-CHO,

CH3-CH=CH(CH3)-CHO,

CH3-CH2-CHOH-CH2-CHO, and

CH3-CH2-CH=CH2-CHO.
