Bacteria, some insects and fungi that live in the soil and on the decaying matter. The fungi for example decay on the lignin present in the wood so helps in wood decomposition of trees. If the decomposer like fungi are absent the wood mass will not decompose and it will remain as waste and can be used by the plants in the form of nutrients.
