• Respiration is one of the most common chemical reactions on earth. It includes the oxidation of glucose
(CsH1206) into carbon dioxide and water with the release
of approximately 2900 kJ of energy when one mole of
glucose is broken down according to the following
balanced equation:
C6H12O6 + 602 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + 2900 kJ mol-1
Then, upon the reaction of 25 grams of glucose with 40
grams of oxygen: 0,
- What is the limiting reactant?
- What mass of carbon dioxide formed?
- What is the weight left of excess reactant?
How much energy is released upon reaction of the
given amounts of glucose and oxygen?
(Atomic weights = 12.9 = 16 and H = 1 g/mol)
