Sodium bicarbonate is a base, dissolving it in water will increase the solution pH compared to neutral water. A saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate in water has a pH of roughly 9. A molecule will be deprotonated in water if its pKa is equal to or is lower than the pH of the solution. Using this information, you should be able to work out which of the protons has been removed in the form of a proton from curcumin in the presence of sodium bicarbonate. Required:
Draw the curved arrow pushing for the deprotonation of curcumin by the bicarbonate anion and give the products of this reaction (you do not need to include resonance contributors in the anion).
