The industrial-scale reaction of elemental carbon and sulfur dioxide is used to produce carbon disulfide and carbon monoxide using the following reaction:
5C + 250 2 -> CS2 + 4CO
Carbon disulfide, a non-polar solvent, is frequently used to dissolve oils, grease and
waxes.
a) If 37.9 g of sulfur dioxide reacts with excess carbon, how much carbon disulfide
will be produced?
b) If only 16.7 g of CS2 is actually produced in a lab, what is the percentage yield of
the lab?
