Phosgene (carbonyl chloride), COCl2, is an extremely toxic gas that is used in manufacturing certain dyes and plastics. Phosgene can be produced by reacting carbon monoxide and chlorine gas at high temperatures: CO(g)+Cl2(g)→ COCl2(g)

Carbon monoxide and chlorine gas are allowed to react in a sealed vessel at 476°C. At equilibrium, the concentrations were measured and the following results obtained:

Gas Partial Pressure (atm)

CO 0.840
Cl2 1.16
COCl2 0.140

Required:
What is the equilibrium constant, Kp, of this reaction?

Hydrogenation reactions, in which h2 and an "unsaturated" organic compound combine, are used in the food, fuel, and polymer industries. in the simplest case, ethene (c2h4) and h2 form ethane (c2h6). if 140 kj is given off per mole of c2h4 reacting, how much heat (in mj) is released when 12 kg of c2h6 forms?
