1. Bath salts are typically composed of the ingredients listed below. Identify each item as being acidic, basic, or neutral when dissolved in water. If a particular ingredient does make an acidic or basic solution, describe how this occurs. Use the results of your in-lab observations, as well as your textbook and the provided Supplemental Information on pages 65-66, to support your conclusions. NaCl NaHCO3 sodium citrate Na2SO4 MgHPO4 CaCl2 NaCl is neutral in water, as in hydrolysis reaction with water it dissociates to form strong acid and strong base. NaCl + H2O HCl + NaOH Na2SO4 is also neutral. Na2SO4 + 2 H2O H2SO4 + 2 NaOH Sodium citrate is salt of weak acid and strong base. Hence its aqueous solurion is basic. aqueous solution of NaHCO3 is basic. In water the bicarbonate ion hydrolyzed to form OH - ion. HCO3- + H2O H2CO3 + OH- K3PO4 is a salt of weak acid and strong base, hence its water solution is basic. CaCl2 is a salt of strong acid and strong base, hence its water solution will be neutral.
