Tendency of an element to lose the electrons increases when we go down the group.This is because atomic size increases when we move down a group. And force of attraction of nucleus for the valence electron decreases. This makes it easier for an element to lose electrons. Hence, metallic character increases on moving down a group.

We know that there is a increase in the number of valence electrons as well as nuclear charge as we move across a period. Due to this reason, atomic size decreases. As a result, it becomes difficult for an atom to lose electrons as we move from left to right across the periodic table. So tendency to lose the electrons decreases.
