The aqueous solutions of salts are not always neutral. If one of the components of the salt, either the anion or the cation, can be involved in an acid base reaction with water, the pH will not be 7. For each of the following ionic compounds, place a spatula tipful into a clean, small (4") test tube half filled with distilled water. Mix the solution well to dissolve the solid. Remove a small sample from the solution and touch it to a piece of pH paper and compare the color of the paper to the chart on the side of the container to estimate the pH of the solution to the nearest pH unit. For each solution whose pH is not 7, decide which ion from the compound is reacting with water to change the pH from 7. Write a chemical equation showing how that ion is reacting with water to produce H3O + or OH- . Note: Most chemical formulas contain subscripted or superscripted characters. If you are using Word to type your report here’s a quick way to enter those characters. Pressing "Crtl
