Moglobin is made up of two alpha chains and two beta chains, and so it can be represented by (αβ)2. Hemoglobin dissociates into αβ subunits. The equilibrium constant K for the reaction 2 αβ  (αβ)2 depends on the partial pressure of molecular oxygen, but at relatively high concentration of molecular oxygen at pH = 7.0 and T = 21.5 oC, K = 9.50 × 105 when molar concentrations are used, i. e., when the standard state concentration is 1 M. Evaluate the equilibrium concentrations of αβ and (αβ)2 as well as the percent of (αβ)2 dissociated if the total concentration of αβ subunits existing in both forms is 0.000500 M. Assume that activity coefficients for αβ and (αβ)2 are unity.
