In Chem 053, we explored the copper cycle. In the first step, copper was oxidized by nitric acid to make a green solution. Water was then added to the solution and the color changed from green to blue. Is this result supported by the spectrochemical series? For this question, the copper complex goes from Cu(NO3)2to Cu(H2O)62+upon the addition of water. Since Cu2+ is a d9metal, optical transitions will be reflective of the crystal field splitting energy. Cu(NO3)2looks green, so it’s absorbing red; Cu(H2O)62
