Desalination is the process of converting sea water into drinking water. Older processes used a desalination method to desalinate the water, as shown in the
diagram below. Explain how this process produces salt-free water.

From the diagram, the water is being boiled. This process vaporises the water in the vessel leaving salt crystals behind.

Since the water is needed in liquid form, the cold water at the top of the set-up

condenses the vapor so it can be used.
