Procedure:
1- Obtain 5mL of hydrochloric acid in a test tube, a piece of mossy zinc, and a wooden splint. Have the wooden splint nearby.
One partner holds the test tube at a 45° angle, using a test-tube holder, and then slides the zinc down the side of the test tube into the acid. A reaction should begin. Trap some of the gas in the tube using a rubber stopper.
Test for Hydrogen: Your teacher will show you how to light the splint. The other partner brings the flaming splint close to the mouth of the test tube. Hydrogen gas will ignite and burn rapidly down the test tube with a “whoo” sound.
2- Obtain 5 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a test tube, some Sodium Iodine, and a wooden splint.
One partner adds the Sodium Iodine to the hydrogen peroxide. A reaction should begin. Trap some of the gas in the tube using a rubber stopper.
Test for Oxygen: Your teacher will show you how to light the splint and produce a glowing ember. The other partner brings the ember to the mouth of the test tube and inserts the glowing ember into the test tube. If oxygen is present, the glowing ember will burst into a bright flame.
Extinguish the wooden splint
3- Measure 5 ml of vinegar, and pour it into one of the two test tubes.
Measure 5 ml of lime water, and pour it into another test tube.
Place the end of the rubber tubing into the lime water. The end with the rubber stopped will be placed on the test tube containing vinegar after the next step.
Quickly add the scoop of sodium bicarbonate to the vinegar, and immediately place the rubber stopper on the test tube. The gas that is formed will be transported to the lime water through the rubber tubing.
If the gas created carbon dioxide, the lime water will become white and milky.
Record your observations.
Clean up your station, ensuring that it looks the way it did when you came in
