What’s the difference between cation and an anion

When atoms gain or lose electrons from their outer shell they are called either a cation or an anion. When one atom gives an electron to another atom, the atom either gains or loses electrons. When one atom loses an electron, it's called a cation. A cation is an atom which has a positive charge. On the other hand, when an atom gains an electron, it's called an anion. An anion is a atom with a negative charge.
