Ionic compounds

These are formed because of electrostatic attractive forces between the ions of opposite charges. Ionic bonds are present in such compounds. In the formation of ionic compounds, an electropositive atom loses an electron and forms a positively charges species known as a cation. This electron is gained by an electronegative atom and as a result, negatively charged species are formed which are called anions.

Ionic compounds conduct electricity only in their molten or aqueous states due to the presence of free electrons in them. But solid ionic compounds have their constituent ions fixed in their specified positions so electrons are not free to move and therefore these do not conduct electricity.

Ionic compounds have varying solubilities in water. This is because of the different extent of the attraction between the ionic compounds and water. If the attraction between the ionic compound and water is strong enough to break the compound into ions, it will be soluble in water and vice-versa. For example, NaCl and AgCl both are ionic compounds. NaCl is highly soluble in water whereas AgCl is insoluble in water.

Ionic compounds are formed due to electrostatic forces between the oppositely charged ions. These forces are extremely strong in nature and therefore ionic compounds have high melting points.

The existence of strong electrostatic forces between ionic compounds is responsible for their hardness. The constituent ions of an ionic compound are so tightly packed that they cannot bend. Even if force is applied to ionic compounds, they develop a crack but can never bend.
