2. properties of bases
a. bases have a ph value greater
b. bases feel .
c. bases are good cleaners and will react with
d. litmus turns in the presence of a basic solution.
e. phenolphthalein turns in the presence of a basic solution

3. definitions of acids and bases
a. the formula for an acid will always contain:

b. the formula for a base will usually contain:

c. what is the formula for the base, barium hydroxide? which ions are produced when barium hydroxide dissociates in water?

d. what is the formula for phosphoric acid? which ions are produced when phosphoric acid dissociates in water?

e. which part of hydrochloric acid, hcl, is the acidic part?

f. which part of sodium hydroxide, naoh, is the basic part?

g. write a balanced equation for the neutralization reaction that occurs when potassium hydroxide and hydrobromic acid are mixed. include state symbols.

ph and poh

ph is an indication of how acidic or basic a solution is.
ph = -log[h+].
a logarithm (log) is just the exponent to which ten (10x) is raised to obtain a given value.
for example if [h+] = 1.0x10-5, then the log of 1.0x10-5 = -5 and the ph would be 5.
it is easier to find the poh for a base and then to convert to ph. the following formulas will .
poh = -log[oh-].
ph + poh = 14
[h+][oh-] = 10-14

Effect of rotenone and antimycin a on electron transfer rotenone, a toxic natural product from plants, strongly inhibits nadh dehydrogenase of insect and fish mitochondria. antimycin a, a toxic antibiotic, strongly inhibits the oxidation of ubiquinol. (a) explain why rotenone ingestion is lethal to some insect and fish species. (b) explain why antimycin a is a poison. (c) given that rotenone and antimycin a are equally effective in blocking their respective sites in the electron-transfer chain, which would be a more potent poison? explain.

Astudent made the lewis dot diagram of a compound as shown. mg is written with two dots shown on its top. an o is written on each side of mg. each o has six dots around it. an arrow is shown from one dot on mg toward the vacant space around the o on the right. another arrow is shown from the other dot on mg toward the vacant space around the o on the left. the title of the art is students lewis dot model. what is the error in the lewis dot diagram? an o atom should transfer all its six electrons to mg because the formula is mgo. both electrons of mg should be transferred to one o atom because the formula is mgo. the electrons should be transferred from each o atom to mg because mg has fewer electrons. the number of dots around mg should be four because it has to transfer two electrons to each o.
