A civil trial starts with the pleadings, where the plaintiff file their complaint with the court. The defendant can then answer the claim. This brings the trial to discovery, where each side gathers evidence for their argument before the judge. Once discovery is over, the sides will meet the judge for the pre-trial conference, where the 9matter to be decided is discussed. The trial itself will follow, and then the judge will decide on the outcome. At any time, the judge may offer a summary judgement, which resolves the case by proclaiming no conflict of facts and deciding one the merits of the law, a default judgement if the defendant fails to respond to the summons, or a civil settlement, if both litigants decide to agree on a fair resolution.
