The free-rein leadership style is basically a hands-off style where the boss (manager, supervisor) allows his/her employees to basically make their own decisions, e.g. set their own performance objectives, and decide which activities will help them accomplish their objectives. It empowers employees by assigning them great responsibility and decision power, and can result very motivating.

The problem with this leadership style is simply what happens when the company's objectives and goals are not accomplished. It doesn't refer to the goals set by each employee, but rather the goals that should be accomplished by the whole company.
