Primary productivity can be defined as the measure of the rate at which photosynthetic organisms produce organic compounds in an ecosystem. productivity can be looked at in two major ways, namely; gross productivity and net productivity.

1. Gross productivity

The entire photosynthetic organic compounds productions in an ecosystem.

2. Net  productivity

Net productivity is the organic compounds in an ecosystem that remain after the photosynthetic organisms have utilizes some of the organic compounds for processes such as respiration.

Benthic biomass is therefor the amount of organic energy that are released by organisms in the benthic zone that utilize energy from the sun either directly or indirectly. The benthic zone defines an area that is the lowest point of a water body such as; a lake, ocean and stream. This zones has various organisms that thrive in it. The organisms are either be photosynthetic plants which utilize energy directly from the sun to produce organic compounds or animals that feed on the plants for energy.
