Most Europeans were indeed anxious to explore the unkown because they were going to the new place in the first place in order for them to improve their own standing in society. By going to new lands, they hoped to improve this. And they had a lot of reason to be anxious as well - the new lands were shown to be quite difficult to safely traverse.
