Surface mining involves extraction of materials from superficial layers of earth whereas in subsurface mining internal layers are dug out to get these materials. Surface mining is more ecologically damaging than subsurface mining because it removes the vegetation cover and causes soil erosion. This reduces the capacity of low land streams to occupy flood water hence, result in flooding. Landslides are also, caused by surface mining. The blasting operations conducted by machines and equipments causes air and noise pollution.
