In swimming to antarctica, what motivates cox to swim a mile in antarctic waters?

Cox motivated to swim because she wants to prove that she can do it, that she can successfully cross the Antarctica; even though something went wrong in her first swim when Lynne Cox's head goes under the water and she change her course because the course she is on is not long enough.
