Littoral zone or intertidal zone is the zone that includes the region of foreshore and sea bed. This zone is partially submerged inside the water body. This zone is exposed to the influence of high and low tides. This region exhibit shallow water and receives maximum sunlight as compared to other aquatic zones.  Riparian zone is a zone that borders the water bodies like rivers and lakes. This zone is not submerged inside the water body.

The riparian zone exhibit more vegetation as compared to the littoral zone because this zone provides a proper substrate for the plant growth for example soil whereas the littoral region does not provide. The plants grow over the surface of water. The surface runoff due to water erosion gets deposited over this zone before reaching the water body. This results in the availing essential nutrients necessary to support plant growth.
