Explain the principle of superposition in your own words.

The principle of superposition is pretty simple.

This principle suggests that the closer the rock layers are to the surface, the younger they are, and the deeper the rock layers are, the older they are.

But, this principle can only be applied if the rocks have been affected by geological processes that have disturbed them and moved and mixed them over time.

This principle is often used for the basic determining of the age of the fossils, so it can only give us the information about a certain period/era, but not an exact age.
