Groundwater is the source of drinking water for more than one-half of U. S. residents. As water seeps through the soil, it carries
substances applied to the land, such as fertilizers and pesticides. Water moves through aquifers, and eventually surfaces in
discharge areas, such as streams, lakes, and estuaries. It is common to think of surface water and groundwater as separate
resources but they are interconnected. Imagine your source of household water is groundwater and you want that water to be free
from contaminants and toxins. Using the illustration above, choose all the possible sources of contamination to your water.
