Dear Student, Hello from the community activists at Save the Shoreline! We are committed to protecting the sand dunes, and we need your help deciding what type of plants to purchase.

Please read the article Sand Dunes: More Than Giant Heaps of Sand to learn the importance of sand dunes and ways to rebuild and repair them. Then, answer the text-dependent questions in your activity worksheet.

After you have read the article, you will need to get to work selecting plants. To evaluate the plants, use your activity worksheet. It provides the characteristics unique to each plant and whether it meets the following four criteria:

native or exotic species
tolerance to sea spray
growth rate
lifespan
When you are done evaluating the plants, rank your choices from most desirable (1) to least desirable (7). Make sure you develop a procedure for ranking the plants, so you can explain why you ranked the plants in the order you did.

We are excited to hear what plants you choose! Please write us back and tell us the order of your rankings and your procedure for how you ranked the plants.

Thank you,
Sandy Waters
President, Save the Shoreline
