Protein E5 regulates apoptosis in some cells-its expression is modified by the presence of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVS)--the virus induces expression of E5 in infected cells, E5 helps infected cells escape surveillance by the immune system, and E5 protein presence in the cell prevents apoptosis which would normally result in the death of cells infected by the virus.
