Introduction: Adiabatic cooling occurs when a parcel of air rises with vertical movement (for instance along a mountain). When air rises, it expands because less pressure is exerted on it. As air rises and expands, the air a bigger volume of space; this process requires the use of energy. Because the air molecules are spread farther apart, there is decreased frequency of molecular collision which results in decreased temperature-this process occurs without any heat exchange between the surrounding environment and the rising air parcel; that is, the temperature of the atmosphere does not have any impact on the parcel. Conversely, adiabatic warming occurs as air descends and it is warmed by compression resulting from increased pressure A rising air parcel cools at a fairly constant rate. If the air is unsaturated, the air will cool at a rate pt 10°C for every 1000m rise in elevation, and, ifit is sinking, it will warm at the same rate - this is called the dry adiabatic rate (DAR). Once the air reaches saturation or dew point, a rising parcel will cool at a réduced rate of -6°C for every 1000m rise in elevation because of the warming effect of the latent heat energy through condensation on the air parcel- this is called the moist adiabatic rate (MAR). Adiabatic Cooling Which of the following are true of a rising parcel of air?
Select the two correct answers that apply
a. The MAR of a rising parcel is lower than the DAR because, at the MAR, the cooling parcel is cooled further by the latent heat of condensation.
b. The MAR of a rising parcel is lower than the DAR because, at the MAR, the cooling parcel is warmed by the surrounding air.
c. The MAR of a rising parcel is lower than the DAR because, at the MAR, the cooling parcel is cooled by the latent heat of evaporation.
d. The MAR of a rising parcel is lower than the DAR because, at the MAR, the cooling parcel is warmed by the latent heat of evaporation.
e. The MAR of a rising parcel is lower than the DAR because, at the MAR, the cooling parcel is warmed by the latent heat of condensation.

The phlogiston theory in the 17th century attempted to explain burning. the theory stated that combustable objects contained a material called phlogiston, a substance without mass, color, odor, etc. after objects burned, the objects were dephlogistonated and were then in their true form. the phlogiston theory was accepted until the 18th century, when lavoisier proved that combustion requires a gas that has mass. phlogiston is considered a) to be scientific knowledge b) not to be scientific knowledge c) to be proven by scientific method d) to be accepted in the modern scientific community
