A sample of sand, mud and water is collected from a river bed and found to contain particles of a wide range of sizes, from microscopic to 5 cm. The sample is placed in a closed glass cylinder, shaken up and left to stand. Although many of the particles fall to the bottom of the container, the water remains cloudy. Give the scientific names of the particles that collect on the bottom of the container and the cloudy liquid that remains above them.
Describe how the particle size varies with height in the cylinder.
