The valence electrons of an element are used in bonding. As for their relationship with the periodic table they determine the position of an element on the periodic table.

For example sodium has the atomic number eleven and its total number of electrons is also eleven(number of protons=number of electrons). When the electrons are placed in their shells there is one electron in the outermost shell,which indicates that sodium is in group one.

Electrons in general also help in determining the period of an element. The number of shells occupied by an element is the period.
