Genetic engineering, or genetic modification, is the manipulation of an organism’s genome using modern DNA technology. Today, gene modification takes place in many of the foods were grow and eat. You may have eaten plenty of these genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, without ever knowing it. GMOs are more resistant to drought and pesticides. Genetically modified plants and animals can grow faster and produce more food. In humans, genetic engineering is more complex and much less effective. However, as advances in technology are made, modifying the human genome could have a long list of potential benefits. But where should science draw the line? Should two parents be able use genetic modification to acquire the desired sex of their offspring? Should genetic modification be used to enhance human muscles or memory? Should genetic modification be used to remove genes for potentially inherited diseases?
