In the stomach, the sandwich pieces will be churned up and broken down even more. Pepsin, a digestive enzyme in the stomach, will break down the proteins from the sandwich and turn them into polypeptides. The HCI activates other enzymes, which also break up the food and kill germs. The wall of the stomach is protected by mucus and little is absorbed in the stomach itself.
