Nucleic acids offer variability because they contain alternate forms of genes called as alleles. Alleles are the alternate forms of genes, and are a variant form of genes, which are found at the same place (called as locus), on the chromosome, and may form due to mutation. If both alleles are same, then an organism is homozygous for the character expressed y those alleles. If both alleles are different, then the organism is said to be heterozygous for that condition, and only dominant allele will express itself, resulting in the production of the dominant phenotypic character.
