Three main lipids are triacylglycerols, phospholipids and sterols.

Lipids are important to play different roles in human body such as energy storehouse, important signaling molecules and structural components of cell membrane. These are belongs to organic compounds which are mostly insoluble in water.

Triacylglycerols: They are also called triglycerides. Naturally occurring triglycerides are present in many food items such as olive, corn, nuts, and avocados. Commonly triglycerides in our food is oils, and fat.

Phospholipids: They are present in both plants and animals, and water-soluble in nature. Phospholipids responsible for create a protective barrier around the body cells. They synthesized in the body for the formation of cell and organelle membranes.

Sterols: Cholesterol is the best example of sterol. The body produces most of the cholesterol and gets only small amount of cholesterol from the food. Cholesterol is necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D, bile salts, and sex hormones so, cholesterol is the main important component of the cell membrane.
