Most of this fluid is released during ejaculation to provide an environment that is essential for the proper functioning, and survival of sperm.

A pair of glands that are present in the pelvis of the male and are responsible for the production of semen is known as seminal vesicle or glands. It is estimated that out of a total, 70% of the semen volume is provided by this vesicle. Prostatic secretions and testicular spermatozoa produce the remaining 30% of the semen.

These vesicles are present as the long tubular structure of 5cm and are found between the rectum and the bladder fundus. The seminal vesicle consists of three layers. The inner moist layer functions to make the semen. The middle and the outer layer are made up of smooth muscle tissue and connective tissue, respectively.

The vesicle combines with vas deferens to form a duct called ejaculatory duct, which helps in draining the substances into the urethra. During ejaculation, the middle layer contracts and results in the release of the seminal fluid into the duct.
