a) Weathering - At this stage the pre-existing rocks are broken down by natural forces.

b) Erosion and transportation - The weathered rock pieces or soil is carried by air, water , ice (glaciers) etc. for deposition at any place

c) Deposition -  At this stage, the carried away soil and smaller rock fragments are dumped at one place for piling up

d) Lithification - This stage consists of two steps a) Compaction and b) Cementation

In compaction , excess water is expelled out of piled up materials by the virtue of their own weight and in cementation chemical forces build up to form sediment deposits.
