Lipids are the esters of fatty acids. They are hydrophobic and play an important role in cell membrane structure. Some lipids like triglycerides act as a storage compound for reserve energy. They provide energy to the body. These are soluble in ether, alcohol, benzene, etc. It consists of C, H, N, O, P.  

There are different types of lipids such as - simple lipids, compound lipids, and steroids.  

The simple lipids only consist of fats and alcohol. Examples of simple lipids are fats and waxes. Fats are also two types- saturated and unsaturated.

The compound lipids consist of other substances besides fatty acids and glycerols. These are phospholipids,  glycerophospholipids, glycolipids.  Phospholipids are the lipids having glycerol, phosphoric acids, and fatty acids.  

Steroids do not contain fatty acids. The important steroids are cholesterol and ergosterol. The ergosterol is the precursor of vitamin D.
