II. Ignition test. This involves the application of heat on a minuscule amount of the compound or substance using a metal spatula. This helps to prove whether the compound is aliphatic or aromatic. An aliphatic compound such as methylated spirit is aliphatic because it produces a luminous flame. Vegetable Oil on the other hand is aromatic because it produces a sooty flame.
