Before antibiotics,
someone who cut their finger, bumped their head, or scraped their knee often got very sick because there was no safe,
common method to fight bacteria. The first antibiotic, penicillin, was only highly effective against bacterial infections for about two years. Since
then, many antibiotics showed a similar pattern. A student wonders what causes this pattern.
The student draws a diagram of what can happen when people use antibiotics.
Group A bacteria
Group B bacteria
Group C bacteria
During Antibiotics
Why does Group C bacteria appear?
A The bacteria used natural selection because they wanted to improve the species.
B. The bacteria evolved from the individuals who can gather the most resources in the population
C. The antibiotics produced conditions for the individual bacteria to try and get better or be eliminated
D. A mutation occurred during reproduction and the resulting offspring have traits that the antibiotic do not affect
