the "contour" is most likely the lower parts unlike the "lines" which are higher up

Explanation:

so the lines are above every thing and shale is at the bottom because it contains mud and mud gets created from water leaking into the ground and soaking in, also clay gets mixed from mud and coming from beside or below rivers.
