How is selective breeding carried out in plants? Explain with two examples.

A plant is first selected by identifying the plant with phenotype of interest, such that good genes combination for desirable trait are picked out. The plant is then allowed to grow and self fertilise or cross fertilise with other plants of similar phenotype of interest.

Examples:

We can take advantage of this to selectively breed animals or plants, choosing parents with particular characteristics to produce offspring that have those characteristics. For example, if we breed tall parents together and exclude shorter parents, the offspring should inherit “tall” gene variants that make them tall.
