During osmosis, substances move from higher concentrations to lower concentrations due to entropy. Hence, as an example, if you create a barrier that can only pass water through it, and you set the salt concentration to be different on the two sides of the barrier, then water would flow from the less saltier side to the saltier side due to the relative concentration of water on the less salty side being higher, hence it flows to the other side.
