Because the coin has an extremely small mass compared with Earth, the coin can be easily accelerated. Earth’s acceleration due to the force of the coin is far too small to notice because of Earth’s large mass. The acceleration due to Earth’s gravity is called g and is equal to 9.8 m/s2 at Earth’s surface. You can calculate the force of Earth’s gravity on an object at Earth’s surface using the object’s mass and this acceleration. The formula that expresses Newton’s second law is F = ma. If you use g as the acceleration, the formula for calculating the force due to gravity on a mass close to Earth’s surface becomes F = mg.
