Gregor Mendel is an Austrian monk that studied genetics and heredity. Mendel wanted to determine how traits were inherited by offspring.  many believed that heredity blended together in offspring. He used pea plants for his experiment because they reproduce sexually. He used cross-pollination in order to fertilize one pea plant by using the pollen of another. For each trait he studied, all hybrid offspring had only one character from each parent. The allele that appeared in the phenotype appeared to be dominant, and the allele that only showed up in the genotype and not the phenotype.  In his expiriement he concluded that different forms of a gene account for the variations in the inherited traits. An organism inherits two genes, one from each parent, the probabilty of inheriting this trait depended on if it was dominant or recesive. Some alleles dominate others for a given trait (dominant and recesive.) And Finally the genes of a given gene segregate during gamete production.
